BPPV stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, a common inner ear disorder causing short, intense periods of vertigo (a spinning sensation) triggered by specific changes in head position, like lying down or rolling over. It's caused by tiny calcium crystals, called otoconia, that have dislodged from their normal location in the inner ear and entered the semicircular canals, which are responsible for detecting head movement. While not dangerous, it can be distressing and is often treated with specific physical maneuvers performed by a doctor or physical therapist to move the crystals back to their proper place.
