Here, each individual has a tax code and your employer, based on that code, will deduct tax from your wages and you receive what's left. It's why self-employed people do have to submit tax returns. If you over pay - maybe it's a new job and your employer took a while to get your tax code - the tax people will send you what you're owed, you don't need to do anything. They'll also come after you if you owe money but, if there's no tax dodging going on they will usually work out a repayment plan.
