Remembrance MSM© (Susie Q)

Ag'ed men stand ramrod straight
From each force they represent
Sailor, Soldier, Airman too
they were the lucky ones
though now they are quite few
A memory scorched into their brains of heroism they did see, horrors
unimaginable for you or for me;
though those that died, no more remain
their memory is a sweet refrain.
The flower of our youth did die
as in a foreign field they lie
or beneath the ocean deep
each poppy petal represents one life
though a million tears did fall.
They gave their lives so we at home
may berate the cost of the economy
So, on the 11 month, of the 11 day
upon the 11 hour
bow your head in gratitude
and wear your poppy red
for all those heroes who ne'er came home
So we could simply say;
"They gave of their tomorrow
so we could have today!"

you should be so very proud of your grandfather. I don't think anyone who was involved in the great war would ever be the same. Your Grandfather was a hero. Every man that fought in the great war, even if they survived, would always be traumatised. My father's father was in the Black Watch. He died in 1917. There is no other information about him, as my grandmother only had a picture of him in his uniformed kilt. Daddy was born the same year, so, I suppose he never got to see his son, and my grandmother never spoke of him. So very sad.The younger generation with all this technology, have no idea the great sacrifices that were made by so many. Especially in the great and second world wars. I've found the only winner in war is death! And, that the politicians spend all their time behind a desk, so they're safe. Whilst cannon fodder is used arbitrarily. Thank goodness, my daughter knew my father. She could always wrap him around her little finger. Lovely to "meet" you Susan. Take care. hugz xxx

Daddy was the youngest button boy at 15 (He lied about his age!). You'll know what the button is on the Victory, being a Wren. He was on the Dorchester, when they fired the last salvo's into the Bismark (Although as it turned out the Captain of the Bismark gave orders to scuttle the ship as the keel was irreparably damaged. Then a few months later the Dorchester was sunk and daddy spent 36 hours in the Indian Ocean, covered in oil, watching his comrades die.He fought off sharks with a piece of metal from the sinking. He lost 5 ships in total. Had every medal baring the George & Victoria Cross. He was my knight in shining armour. A true hero!! He wrote a book, called "life sentences" but couldn't get it published because it's not PC. I still have a copy of the manuscript. Take care Susan, xxx
