Totem poles

I have a couple of questions for totem poles. My understanding is once a quest level has been completed one section of the pole will be painted. Which levels correspond to which pole sections? And should the poles be places in the garden as a quest level is completed or can they also be painted while in storage as a level is completed? Thanks for your assistance.

The poles alternate being paintable.

Completing Levels I, III, V, VII allows you to paint the mammal pole.
Completing Levels II, IV, VI, VIII allows you to paint the bird pole.

The pole is not pained automatically, so it doesn't matter where you have it when you complete the level. To paint a section, just hover over the pole while it's in your garden and click "paint it".
