Hi
I can't find the previous post where this was answered, which nest takes priority- the one needing repair or one for bird to lay in?
If anyone can remind me

Ah found it on my back wall! The nest ready to lay in always takes priority over one waiting fir repair

So you are saying the completed nest in your storage, you should use instead of trying to complete a new nest from scratch?

Jessica - it depends what you're trying to do.
You can never have too many nests anyway - Easter is coming soon when the most nests the better!
Birds will only nest in a nest they have helped to build.
So if you want a wagtail egg, and you already have a completed nest, which the wagtail helped to build - then it would be quickest to put out that completed nest.
If you want to try for an egg for a different bird, and you don't have a completed next available that the bird has helped to build, then it would make sense to make a new nest/finish a partially completed one and set up for that bird, so it can help build it.
You can also have more than one nest in your garden at the same time, so you can do both - build a new nest while getting an egg in an already completed nest.
It really depends on what you're trying to achieve, and what nests you already have available, in terms of the best strategy to use.

Every 10th bird spotted in your garden will nest. The same bird must have helped to build this nest before.
It looks like if you attract two more chaffinches then it will nest :)
