The nests are pretty simple to build. Attract five different types of adult bird (apart from the Cuckoo). The very first spotted in your garden adds a piece to the nest, and after that it's every multiple of five.
Repairing is just the same - the next multiple of five of a bird which hasn't already added to the nest will complete it.
