The default snail names have always intrigued me.  Are they a bit of pop culture I've missed?  The names of Mike's childhood pets?  What?

I have always assumed that Heston was after Heston Blumenthal (because of his recipe for snail porridge).

Brian the Snail from the Magic Roundabout.

Zippy - irony because snails are not fast.

No idea about Freddy though ...

There was a kid's show on in the 70's/80s' in the uk called Rainbow,  zippy was a frog with a zip for his mouth, george was a loveable pink hippo  (also bungle who was a teddy bear was a teddy bear. (not sure about brian and heston, tracey could be right). they made an adult version as well, full of innuendoes-available on youtube- very funny lol

Freddy was one of the singers on Rainbow so there may be something in that, Graham!

Thanks, guys. I grew up with Captain Kangaroo and Sesame Street here in the states. I never would have known. It's like when I watched BBC's Vicar of Dibley from the nineties - - laughed my head off, but I had to go look up a few things afterwards.

Zippy wasn't a frog, he was a yellow/orange puppet with head the shape of a rugby ball with a Zip for a mouth. The tv show the muppets had a green frog called kermit.

My sons called him zippy the frog, but strictly speaking I suppose you're correct.

These last 2 are just to complete the set - they came after FL snails.

Freddy Goes to France - the Snail Farms of Burgundy is a book by Steve Harris.  Could that be the connection to Freddy the Snail?

I love those names and have kept them, as soon as I saw them I thought it was the characters from Rainbow.
