Does anyone here have chickens in real life? We're thinking of starting a little backyard flock and I was wondering if anyone had any tips!

What health concerns have you had? In other words, have any of your hens gotten sick and how did you help them?

we have been pretty lucky really and had no real health issues - if you keep the coop clean and worm them fairly regularly you should be ok....we did use the vets once but that was because we bought an old hen and she already had issues when we got her.
our original 4 were bought at 20 odd weeks - the rest of our hens have been ex bats - they are pretty tough cookies !

sorry - ex battery hens - the ones that commercial farmers keep and when they get to around 18months old they are sent to slaughter - they are rescued by the British Hen Welfare Trust and we, for a small donation, take them and they hopefully live out there lives in a much better way than they started

Yes, as above, a safe dry coop and clean them out weekly. I kept bantams, and when one went broody, a friend gave me a clutch of fertilized eggs to hatch out, as I had no cockerel. Just look look out for foxes.

Have you ever added a chicken or two to your current flock? I've heard that's tricky.
