It was hot, dry and dusty across this vast land, and no-one knew for sure what lay beneath the red sand,
Sure the orebody had been pierced by a few diamond drills, but nothing of any value had come from these red sandhills,
And it was in the winter of 1980, when the obstacles were plenty and the problems weighty,
That a mining man called Bob Crew came from the west, and he set up an office in Adelaide at the Company’s request,
He was impatient, pig-headed and determined to win; all the bureaucratic bullshit frustrated the miner in him,
He pondered over drawings and possible sites: His responsibility was great, there were many sleepless nights,
And one day I’m sure when his patience was wearing thin, the hierarchy came from Melbourne and they said to him,
“Go ahead Bob, it’s green light to mine” and Bob didn’t ask if they were joking this time,
The headframe was up and there was a winder room, and from the bowels of the earth came a muffled boom,
He was proud as a parent as he watched the Whenan Shaft sink, while he was measuring the progress he was happiest I think,
