Reva Madryga Hey my friend. I wanted to bring some clarity to this.
Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit given for both personal edification and, when interpreted, for the edification of the church. Scripture teaches that “the one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God and builds up himself” (1 Corinthians 14:2, 4).
I understand what you mean with the church bit of this and I can see how it can come off as gimmicky and showy. However in moments of worship or prayer especially when many are worshiping together, tongues function as Spirit led prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede where words fail (Romans 8:26). In these settings, no interpretation is required because the focus is vertical, meaning directed toward God and not instruction toward the congregation.
To balance this scripture also teaches that order and discernment matter in corporate gatherings. When the church is in a time of teaching or attentive listening, tongues spoken aloud should be accompanied by interpretation so the whole body may be built up or edified (1 Corinthians 14:27–28). Without interpretation, speaking in tongues during these moments does not edify others and can create distraction, which is why Paul emphasizes clarity “I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1 Corinthians 14:19). This is not a quenching of the Spirit but obedience to His nature, for God is not a God of confusion but of peace so we need to let all things be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40).
I pray this brought some clarity to you ! May the Lord bless you with wisdom and understanding and a transforming and renewing of your mind ! 🕊️🤍🤍🤍
