Stardust is a gift Mike gives to those who buy gold with real money. I think there a few ways to earn free stardust in the game (like the first time you spot a rainbow baby chick in another garden), but it's not frequent or a lot.
If/when you complete the Dino challenge (attract 40 of each dino in your garden), you get free superfood for 48 hours each month (which is normally purchased with stardust).
