So what was different about wandering our favourite roads through Devon? We took a turning off the A38 to take a different road to Mortonhampstead/. It is an A road but was single track in places with high green hedges and nearer the village walls. It was very scenic with rolling green hills and livestock enjoying the sun in the meadows.
Dartmoor was green as the bracken is now shooting up a fresh green up to two feet high. Grass is growing and there were cars, motorbikes and minibuses (walking groups) at the side of the road. We saw sheep, cattle, ponies and some highland cattle. It was unusual not to get anyone impatient behind us as we drove slowly past sheep on the road. There was a man repairing a stone wall and not far from him a ewe and lamb on top of a wall-they quickly destroy things! There were cars outside of the pub that claims the fire in the fireplace has not gone out for hundreds of years. We could see for miles to distant piles of grey rocks known as tors. There was a cool breeze and the temperature was 14C. As we descended into Tavistock the sun felt warmer. We ascended the hill through Mary Tavy and as the sky became greyer could not miss the dark clouds ahead. So we took a left through the village of Lydford to a National Trust cafe and got into the dry as it began to rain heavily.
After we had eaten and it had eased we started for home. However the sky did brighten as we avoided large puddles and in time we found dry roads and even acquired a shadow. We drove past fields of green corn heading up ears of wheat in one field, oats in another. Maize was shooting but looking rather yellow so high on the hills possibly due to cold nights. At Torrington we passed the bikes and ice cream van at the Commons and continued to Bideford, refilling with fuel in Barnstaple.
