Good morning Theresa, I have never tried pickled herring. I'm not a huge fan of pickled foods, except pickles or beets, nor am I a fan of smoked foods. I have tried things but now just stick to what I like. My daughter goes through these periods of trying new recipes and I try them but I like to know what I'm eating...lol
Are you still enjoying your walks by the water? I've only visited BC once for a week and we stayed in a hotel in Victoria, at that time we were thinking of relocating.  It's a beautiful place.
