Ok, double-apologies! 😜

The first year we offered BC, one of the other teachers taught it as an independent study during his prep period (the union hates it when we do that kind of thing, lol).  He had four students, but they were fabulous.  He ended up teaching them multi-variable calculus and all kinds of fun things.  We were lucky the next year to have a principal willing to devote the money to support a full BC class even though it only had 14 students.  Since then, it has consistently been 20 to 30 students.  They're usually a lot of fun to teach, as you can imagine. 🥰

When I came to Hazen, our enrollment was about 1,400 kids with one Calculus class.  The Calculus teacher (who was also department head) moved on, and I took over her spot (and the department chair position).  I worked really hard to build the program and was pleased to get it up to (at one point) four sections of AP Calc AB and one of AP Calc BC.  I started having to "share" when we hired someone else capable of teaching them (it is an enticement, at least for some, to be able to offer them sections of AP).  Anyway, with the pandemic and gradual shifting in our demographics, we have more students trying to get their Associates degrees at the local community colleges (to reduce college costs), so we are down to 3 sections of AB and 1 BC. Our school has always been somewhat diverse, but over the last 10 years, increasingly so. Interestingly, I think the greatest impact is coming from Asian immigrant families ~ they need the community college credits to offset college costs, and don't always fully understand the benefits of AP courses.  And of course with the pandemic, lots of the high-achieving kids got used to working independently and don't see the value of discourse with like-minded kiddos.  Anyway ~ I am proud of how I developed the program.  I hope it doesn't die after I retire.

Yes, I've had to "share" the AP Calc sections the last few years, but it is a good thing, since it will make the transition easier.  The other teacher and I have been working together the last 4 or 5 years to make sure our AP Calc offerings were comparable.  He will be fine.  He has even taught BC (the higher level) before, but he doesn't want to take that on until he has to, so I will probably continue to teach one section of AB and one section of BC.  Since I've taught them both many, many times before, it doesn't matter whether I have two "preps" or one ~~ I am cautiously very optimistic!
