If you stored last years calendar, it will be in your storage area with any festive trees you have stored.  You have harvested three calendars though, so I wonder whether last years was one of them.

No, you can't buy background effects.  They come from plant/pot combinations or seasonal plants.  You can see them listed here:

I have a door in storage for each year we've had the Advent Calendar. It would be helpful if when finished each door displayed the year that way we know which one was the one with the Christmas lights.

Or just have the lights surrounding the door when it is finished.
