Prompted by a thread in the Suggestions section, I thought it might be useful to have a list of persistent Fairyland "myths" which we know to be untrue, just as a reference so that people can refer to it and know whether something which someone has suggested is true or not.   I know there was a thread, years ago, but I can't find it.

Add any that I've missed and maybe once we've come up with a complete(ish) list between us, someone could collate it and type it up to make a document for the Useful Topics section?

So the ones I can think of:

White pots encourage albinos to visit.

Pink pots encourage unicorns to visit.

Watering a garden before a certain time on new food brings mice instead of unicorns.

Placement of pots affects wildlife visiting.

Fully grown mushrooms lose their deterrent properties as they get older and before they are RTH

Putting out a Scarecrow stops Pairs of Magpies taking the treasure when you are doing certain Fairytales

Superfood guarantees better wildlife

There are more mice and mallards at the weekend

Watering a supershroom, brings more WRC

Purchasing gold gives better results.

RFH plants lose their attracting powers as they age.

The time between wildlife visits gets longer during certain times of the year (seasonals, just after free superfood weekends, etc.).

Any plant can be a "dud" and requiring replanting because that one "didn't work".

watering a plant that has the red banner when you hover your mouse over it guarentees a critter

Advertising that a certain critter hasn't arrived leads to having one spotted not long after!!

Must say I do love all the superstitions though... if something is not happening in the garden, it can give a sense of being able "to do something" to try and help bring the magic, even if it has no empirical base!!!  LOL

The superstitions make me smile too.  But they can lead to confusion and complaints, though, when someone has been told that such-and-such will definitely cause something to happen and then it doesn't.   It can also be costly when someone is told categorically that they have to have the white/pink magical pots or that they must remove their mushroom at whatever percentage because it doesn't work after that.

People post this stuff on the forums too, and people believe it and pass it around because "well, if it was on the forums then it must be true!".

What I will probably try to do, once we've got the list, is post a thread which lists the myths, and gives a brief reason why it isn't true.  Most, if not all, of these myths have been refuted by Mike in the past, and it might be useful for people who aren't sure what to believe to know that they have no basis in truth :)

Wasn't there one about making sure your RFH Piscis Aquabullae fish point to the food plate in order to attract the kingfisher?

Tracey and Cobweb7 years, 2 months ago

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that one.  And that the cockerel on the Ventus has to point towards the food :)

"My garden is unlucky when it comes to attracting *insert wildlife here*".
